Algoma Township was
constituted a regular law township by the Michigan Legislature in
March 1849. The
Township was named in honor of a steamship, which cruised on the
Grand River between Grand Rapids and Grand Haven at that time. It is
also purported to be named Algoma, which was a local Indian word
meaning "Fields of Wild Roses". |
