In 1959 the Camp Lake Fire Department joined with another group of
Algoma Township residents that were helping to operate the Rockford
Fire Department and formed the Algoma Township Fire Department. Its
first piece of equipment was a 1932 Model B Ford Pumper, that was
acquired from Kent County. The first fire station was built in 1955
on the corner of Bobolink and Division Avenue at Camp Lake. Some
time in the early 60’s they built the fire station at Pine Island
and Fonger and in 1976 built the station at 13 Mile Road and
Edgerton Avenue, both of which are currently in use. It has been
said that the Camp Lake Fire Department was the first Volunteer Fire
Department in Kent County. |

Being
prepared to deal with almost any type of emergency is an important
part of being a good fire department. Training is what prepares you
for these emergencies. In 2000 Algoma Township fire fighters spent a
total of 1830 man hours in training. Just over 63 hours per person.
We are fortunate as a fire department to have several very
knowledgeable people on the Department. There are several areas we
are mandated by State and Federal regulations and standards to have
training in each year. Some of these are hazardous materials, fire
fighter’s right to know, blood born pathogens, emergency driving,
self contained breathing apparatus and other areas. In addition to
our departmental training fire fighters attend numerous classes put
on by the State Fire Marshall's
office.
